I RUN FOR FREEDOM…
The Kick-off Event for the 2011
Human Trafficking Awareness Month
September 10, 2011
About the Cause
“When the sun goes back
and the first quail calls
Follow the drinking gourd.
The old man is a-waitin’ for
to carry you to freedom.
Follow the drinking gourd”
Over 150 years a Over 150 years ago slaves from the south would anxiously await nightfall to escape and run north to freedom. With coded songs humming in their head that pointed the direction, such as “Following the Drinking Gourd” which secretly instructed the slaves to follow the big dipper to the northern star and the northern star to freedom.
The times have changed, the songs are no longer sung, but unfortunately the slavery still exists. Join Houston Rescue and Restore Coalition as we honor those who once looked up to the stars for their chance for freedom and those who still do today.
About the Run
Proceeds from this event will go directly to the outreach and educational activities of Houston Rescue and Restore Coalition, whose mission is to confront modern-day slavery by educating the public, training professionals and empowering the community to take action.
The run/walk will begin and end at Pavilion 2 in Tom Bass Regional Park Section I. The run will go along the park’s inside track out onto Fellows Road, down to Tom Bass Regional Park Section II around the lake and back on Fellows Road to Tom Bass Regional Park Section I and back to Pavilion 2. For those who are competitive runners we will be offering a timed run this year. Please see additional costs associated with the competitive run.
