The Kick-off Event for the 2010 Human Trafficking Awareness Week
September 18, 2010
Start Time: 6pm
ABOUT THE CAUSE:
Over 150 years ago slaves from the south would anxiously await nightfall to escape and run north to freedom. With coded songs humming in their head that pointed the direction, such as “Following the Drinking Gourd” which secretly instructed the slaves to follow the big dipper to the northern star and the northern star to freedom.
“ When the sun goes back
and the first quail calls
Follow the drinking gourd
The old man is a-waitin’ for
to carry you to freedom
Follow the drinking gourd”
The times have changed, the songs are no longer sung, but unfortunately the slavery still exists. Join Houston Rescue and Restore Coalition as we honor those who once looked up to the stars for their chance for freedom and those who still do today.
