Flashback – Shop Smart 2010

July 12, 2011 | by Phil

During our 4th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Week, HRRC launched a new workshop initiative “Shop Smart: An Abolitionist’s Shopping Guide.” This workshop was designed to bring awareness to participants about how they could shop with a social conscience and make a difference in the consumer demand for products made with slavery. Below are highlights from the 2010 event.

The women at NightLight made the jewelry on display. NightLight assists women wanting to escape from prostitution and provides assistance to victims of sex trafficking in Bangkok, Thailand.

This display exposes the slave trade related to cotton production in Africa.

These cards were handmade by the women of Narimon. Narimon is an organization that creates a safe place forwomen who have been involved, or are at high risk of being involved in the sex tourism industry in Thailand.

This display exposes the corrupt labor practices identified in the production of coffee and coco beans.

Matt Shepperd, founder of I Am Change, spoke at the event and encouraged consumers to be aware of the supply chains of the products they purchase.
