Hershey’s Announcement

On October 3rd, 2012 Hershey announced that it will move its chocolate to 100% certification by 2020. Hershey joined its rival, Mars, with this 2020 certification plan. Though the company remains vague about which certifications its plan includes, the “Raise the Bar, Hershey” Campaign urges Hershey to go 100% Fair Trade with incremental benchmarks. Fair Trade is the most rigorous certification for identifying and remediating the Worst Forms of Child Labor. Click here to read the Campaign’s statement regarding this announcement. Hershey Pledges $10 million to fight Child Labor

The Hershey chocolate company has pledged $10 million dollars for the next 5 years, to educate West African cocoa farmers on how to improve practices and combat child labor. The company’s pledge is said to be a “welcome first step toward accountability.” Later this year, a new version of Hershey’s Bliss brand will be available for purchase – made entirely from Rainforest Alliance-certified farms in West Africa.
