Unpaid Internship Opportunities
Houston Rescue and Restore Coalition is a non-profit organization that exists to raise awareness about modern-day slavery for the direct purpose of victim identification. We accomplish this goal through equipping professionals and the public to recognize Human Trafficking and identify victims for rescue and restoration. As an intern with HRRC, you will gain valuable work experience while contributing to the new abolitionist movement.
The US Department of Justice states that at least 75% of minors exploited through prostitution are controlled by a pimp (US DOJ, March 11, 2008).
All are summer or semester-long internships. You do not need to be a student to participate in our internship program but for those who are students you may be eligible to receive school credit for your internship with us. The following listing is a sample of possible internship opportunities with HRRC. We believe that all interns should have an impactful, meaningful experience working at HRRC. As such, if you have an interest in an area that is not listed, please feel free to contact the office with your idea and how you would like to make a difference in the anti-human trafficking movement.
HRRC is no longer accepting applications for the Spring 2012 semester. If you are interested in a summer internship, HRRC will begin accepting applications in March 2012. If you are interested in an internship please submit an application in March.
Media Outreach Internship
The ideal candidate for this position should posses a background in one of the following areas: business development, marketing, communications, or public relations. A background with graphic design is preferred but not required. The candidate will also assist with outreach to mainstream and alternative media contacts, as well as prepare press releases and media advisories. The media intern will also be responsible for social media outreach including HRRC’s Facebook page, Twitter feeds, and YouTube Channel. The intern will track media stories and advisories regarding human trafficking in the Houston area by documenting media clippings. Additionally, the media intern will assist in developing and updating copy for the www.houstonrr.org website and our other media campaigns.
Domestic Minor Prevention Program Internship
This position will be responsible for collaborating with staff to adapt and run the My Life, My Choice Program for prevention of human trafficking among young girls in Houston. This program will normally run for 10 weeks at a time, requiring the intern to work anywhere from 8 to 15 hours per week in the office. Flexibility is required as the program will be constantly adapting and changing to address the current audience. In addition, flexibility in the intern’s schedule will be key as the program may be offered in the evening hours or on weekends based on the needs of partner agencies.
Prevention Program Development Internship
This person in this internship would be responsible for the development of a prevention program targeting “at risk” male youth ages 12-18 in collaboration with HRRC staff. This program will be designed to educate male youth about human trafficking, self esteem, and responsible sexuality. Responsibilities include research, data collecting, and development of program. Intern will not be responsible for implementing the program. Experience working with youth is preferred. Individuals with a background in public health or program development encouraged to apply.
Human Trafficking Awareness Month Internship
Human Trafficking Awareness Month takes place during the month of September and all events are geared towards shining a spotlight on the hidden crime of modern-day slavery in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area. This Intern would be responsible for assisting with the organizing of events with full time staff, as well as the implementation of events in September. Upon completion of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, the HTAM intern will be primarily responsible for monitoring and compiling information from Human Trafficking Awareness Month (HTAM), including the development of content for HRRC’s website and e-newsletter. The Human Trafficking Awareness Month Intern will be in charge of maintaining sponsorships for HTAM for the upcoming year. This Intern will also be responsible for assessing feedback received on HTAM events in order to make future improvements.
Healthcare Training Program Internship
The Intern for the Health Care Training Program is primarily responsible for assisting the Program Manager in developing the web-based training program. The Intern will be in charge of building upon the existing blueprint for the web-based training. The Intern will also assist the Program Manager in all other aspects relevant to the program, including the development of media for the training program and data collection from pre and post tests. Experience in public health, program evaluation and program development is preferred. This internship has typically been filled by a Master’s in Public Health student.
Human Trafficking Training Internship
The intern in this position will be responsible for assisting HRRC trainers with the research and development of new and existing training programs. In addition, this intern will assist staff in proactive establishing training opportunities in the community, prepare for training and assist trainers on-site.
Program Evaluation Internship
This position will focus on evaluating the success of HRRC various training programs. This intern will be responsible for collecting and analyzing data from each program. The intern will also create and evaluate reports to illustrate the results of the data. Applicants should have a working knowledge of Survey Monkey, Microsoft Excel, and SPSS. Experience in program evaluation or Public Health is preferred.
